On January 11, 2011 coal tar went in to the Hudson River. This substance in the water is the most expensive clean up. If not dealt with quickly it could spread and poison more water. However they used a technique called sponging which is oil absorbing organic clay, to clean it up.
During 9/11 enormous amounts of debris were released around ground zero. This caused many rescue workers to die on scene and many more had health problems. In 2002, the EPA announced the air quality was back to normal.
In Niagara, NY in a town called Love Canal there was an unfinished canal in which several organizations buried tons of toxic waste. The nearby city of Niagara needed land so they bought the area. They constructed a school on top of the canal and accidentally punctured the copper barrier used to seal the toxic material. The toxins seeped into the water ways and poisoned many people.
